The TikTok Hype – 8 facts, that you should know about

TikTok was founded in September 2016 by the Chinese Zhang Yiming, the founder of ByteDance, under the name Douyin. Through the purchase of Musical.ly 2017 and the partnership with Modern Sky 2018, the app received its essential functions and its adapted name for the West. So today TikTok/ Douyin is a video portal for the synchronization of music videos and other short video clips, with the functions of a social network. In the last two years, the app was one of the fastest spreading mobile apps in the world and already competed with the giants YouTube, Instagram, and Facebook within a short time.

What helps TikTok stand out from the competition is that it is more of an entertainment platform than a lifestyle platform. Its ease of use means it appeals to a wide audience around the world.

We have briefly summarized the 8 most interesting statistics for you:

1. 800 million active users (worldwide)

In just 3 years, TikTok reached 800 million active users, making it number 7 in the ranking of the largest social networks & messengers based on the number of monthly active users (MAU) in January 2020, putting the app ahead of well-known platforms such as LinkedIn or Twitter.

2. 1.9 billion downloads (Apple App Store & Google Play)

In February 2019, TikTok broke the 1 billion downloads mark and achieved a further 900 million downloads in just 8 more months. Within a year of development, TikTok has already reached the milestone of 1 million video views per day.

During the development of the app, it was already determined that the younger people under 18 would define the target group. The app was built on this basis and thus reaches 41% of users between 16 and 24 years of age.
